Typically, we think of aerodynamics as the science of reducing drag. You want as little resistance as possible from your equipment while you're producing as much power as you can on the bike. Zipp's Sub-9 disc throws that notion out the window by generating 80g of forward lift at certain wind angles . Like a sailboat tacking into the wind, your equipment can actually propel you forward.
Zipp have achieved the seemingly impossible by applying what they have learned from developing the 1080 and 808 to what was already known about discs. Ringed by patented toroidal rim profile, the Sub 9's shape is an odd one but it works by controlling airflow at the wheel's leading and trailing edges. And just like Zipps non-disc wheels, the Sub 9 absorbs impacts and vibrations from the road surface, making for a comfortable ride over a long bike leg.

Zipps detailed wind tunnel research has allowed them to explore the relationship between rim shape and depth in multiple innovative ways. This 1080 wheel set is designed to extract the maximum from the passing air while eliminating the pulsing drag effects of the trispoke. It is effective at 2-3 degrees more wind yaw than even their popular 808 and produces a saving of 2-3 watts over the standard 404.
